Camel Milk in Hepatitis B

Camel milk is believed to help the chronic patients of hepatitis B by strengthening their immune system to fight against the virus of the disease.

In an experiment conducted in China, two sets of people suffering from Hepatitis B were observed for 1 year. One set (44 patients) were given camel milk in their diet and the other set (60 patients) were taken as control group without any intervention.

Th1-type cytokines are a kind of hormonal messengers, which are responsible for producing proinflammatory, hence killing intracellular parasites and releasing autoimmune responses. IFN gamma is the main Th1 cytokine. Proinflammatory responses if released in surplus amounts may cause uncontrolled damage of tissues. Hence a counter mechanism is needed. Th2‐type cytokines including IL‐4 act as anti inflammatory responses. Anti inflammatory responses if released in excess may negate the Th1 mediated microbicidal action. Hence for a good immune system, human body should have a balanced Th1 and Th2 responses.

In camel milk drinking group, the Th1‐type cytokine IFN‐gamma level was found to be significantly higher than the control group (not given camel milk). Th2‐type cytokine IL‐4 had even more advanced responses. Camel milk helps to keep a balanced amount of these classes of cytokines in human body, hence channelling a stronger immune response against Hepatitis B virus. Camel milk strengthens the cellular immune response, inhibits replication of virus DNA, and promote the recovery of chronic hepatitis B patients.
